Relief Printmaking
Woodcut and Linocut Printmaking
Relief printmaking involves carving away the negative space of your image, which is where you see the paper through the print (the white space). This print is the only woodcut I have documented, but I have done a lot of linocut work, which involves carving linoleum or rubber blocks.
My linocut prints often emerge from emptying my pockets (or bag!) at the end of a long walk. Though repetition is everywhere in nature, it’s the small quirks in leaves, sticks, or pine cones that make them magnetic. Rather than referencing photos, I usually capture their essence directly onto linoleum blocks by eye. This gives them a slightly abstracted appearance and lends to the graphic nature of the prints.
