Drypoint Print Commission (Released Editions)

from CA$85.00

I will work from inspiration photos you’ve provided to hand etch the design onto the plate, making a one-of-a-kind image! These are prints created on a metal plate (either copper or zinc) and printed with black ink onto white archival paper. An edition of 5 prints will be created, and you will receive one print, 1/5 in the edition. The remaining 4 will be added to my shop in person or online.

Work on commissions will begin in October. Limited number available.

See Notes below.

Please Note:

  • Commissions booked will start in October, in the order they are received. Completion dates will be discussed upon booking, typically 4-6 weeks from date work begins.

  • I do not do portraits of people except an occasional graphic linocut if it feels aligned. If a portrait is requested, I may refund the payment. I also refund if I feel that a project is not aligned with my style, skill, or values to ensure only quality works are received.

  • Shipping costs for economic shipping are included. Any additional duty or other postage costs will be paid by the client. Options for local pick-up within Muskoka are available upon request.

Drypoint Process

  1. The drawing is transferred to the plate (I usually do a rough sketch and freehand the details)

  2. A sharp tool is used to etch the drawing into the metal

  3. Ink is added to the whole plate, ensuring it gets into all of the etched lines

  4. The excess ink is removed carefully using a cloth (tarlatan) followed by newsprint. This is done carefully to make sure the ink stays in the lines.

  5. The plate is then moved to the bed of a small press, and a damp paper is lined up and placed on it. Small felt/wool blankets are placed on top to help push the paper into the inked lines when it’s pulled through the press.

  6. The pressure from the press roller transfers the ink and embosses the plate into the paper.

  7. One print in the edition has been pulled! This process is repeated, and perfect/identical images can be made into an edition of prints to sell, usually ensuring these are the only ones that will be printed (which creates their value!)

  8. These editions will consist of 5 prints.
